Follow a simple formula and a rock band might find success. The variables change, but the result often comes down to that detestable five-letter word: trend. When a bandwagon breaks under the weight of a crowd of fans, another one soon arrives. Thankfully, Sweden has given us one of the most refreshing rock acts to reach the United States. Blindside's Silence rises above the trends of its era and establishes the band as a powerful rock act.
Two albums earlier, Blindside's raw metal edge suggested enormous potential. With time, the band's music matured enough to carry it beyond Sweden's underground scene. Melodic verses and choruses now sit alongside its hardcore force. Swelling guitars fill the songs with emotion, then give way to airy effects that support Christian Lindskog's voice. His singing has grown since the earlier records. The cathartic screams remain, but raspy, rhythmic vocals bring new range to the music. Opener “Caught a Glimpse” shows that the band's passion for heaviness remains intact, while “Midnight” offers an atmospheric, melancholy respite.
There is little reason to reach for the skip button during these thirteen tracks, although the album has flaws. Simon Grenehed's intense guitar riffs sometimes retain the same tone from song to song, and similar structures can make parts of the record feel uniform. Those repetitions may limit how often some listeners revisit Silence. Still, Blindside's addictive sound and melodic strength make the weakness easy to overlook.
Blindside earned a place on radio and under the spotlight with this record. Its sound stands apart from much of the era's fashionable rock. If the band continues to follow the music that brought it here, Silence suggests its audience will only grow.
Listening to Silence feels like taking a journey where a yearning heart finds hope and warmth, qualities that can be rare on a hard-rock album. Its songs move with the energy of a summer breeze. This third Blindside album is also the band's mainstream debut on Elektra. Working with producer Howard Benson and the 3 Points Records imprint, Blindside brings a hopeful voice to the alternative-rock landscape.
The band's sound combines hardcore toughness, metal speed, rock determination, and an emotional, sometimes pop-minded sense of melody. Compared with A Thought Crushed My Mind, the rhythms are less tangled and the songs more accessible, without losing their drive. Christian Lindskog's voice is central: clear and expressive even as the guitars strike hard, the drums keep everything taut, and the bass fills out the sound.
Silence can roll in gently like a wave and then break against the rocks. Its sincerity comes through in lyrics shaped by faith and hope. Songs such as “Pitiful” and “Midnight” speak of a redeemer, while “Sleepwalking” turns an everyday spiritual struggle toward the light. The songs invite listeners to hear with their hearts as well as their ears.
Blindside's devotion to Jesus is deeply woven into its music. The album shines with a genuine sound and a message that reaches beyond its powerful guitars.
