Album Review

Hip-hop artist Paul Wright’s side project Rootdown returns with its third release, Tidal Wave. The reggae-influenced group delivers ten songs about faith in God, love, and relationships, blending upbeat pop, rock, and hip-hop into an enjoyable record.

The cheerful “Good Day” opens the album with a message of trusting God to get through the day. It is a strong beginning, setting an optimistic tone for what follows. The title track adds booming bass and an energetic mix of pop-rock and hip-hop. “Tidal Wave” is easily one of the record’s strongest songs.

“All I Wanna Do” and “Golden” offer a pair of sweet love songs. The electronic touches on “All I Wanna Do” make it especially memorable, and it became my favorite track on the album—the one I kept returning to. The harmonies are a major asset to “Golden,” while “You’re Mine” follows with catchy pop melodies and hip-hop passages that make it easy to sing along.

“Storm Warning” takes a more serious turn, beginning with thunder effects before moving into a heavier mood. It leads into the aptly titled “Growing Up,” whose extended instrumental ending is another enjoyable moment.

“H.B.” brings a playful reggae feel, while “Karl Malone in a Cowboy Hat” leans more heavily toward hip-hop. Its message encourages listeners to step up and do something rather than sit around. The song also recalls Paul Wright’s solo work, which is hardly surprising. Finally, “Weekend” closes the album with a carefree song about spending the day with friends.

Tidal Wave is a fantastic release that I enjoyed from beginning to end. The balance of fun songs and more serious themes makes the album even stronger. It became a new favorite of mine, and it is well worth checking out.
