Album Review

Once in a while, you come across a band with a sound that seems ready for a much wider audience. Popcult is one such band. The four-piece group consists of Justin Renaud, Tyler Venter, Alex Halvorson, and Brandon Proff. Their first EP offers a polished set of indie pop-rock songs that are charming and easy to listen to.

Despite calling themselves Popcult, short for popular culture, the band does not simply follow the pop bandwagon. Their music has a personal touch. From the high-quality recording to the thoughtful lyrics and catchy melodies, the EP reflects their passion and care.

The opening track, “Life in the Wind,” combines keyboards, strong vocals, and a relaxed pop-rock sound reminiscent of early Coldplay. After a listen or two, its melody makes a convincing case for a place on your playlist.

The other tracks share a similar approach, bringing together piano, soft guitars, swelling drums, and melodic vocals. “Already Gone” and “One Reward” are particular highlights, although the entire EP is enjoyable. Listeners who miss the sound of early Coldplay and early-2000s pop-rock should find plenty to appreciate.

Popcult may not be reinventing the genre, but this debut makes the band worth watching. Its strengths lie in well-crafted songs and an inviting sound that holds up to repeated listening.
