Here lies a list of some of my favorite albums. Over the years I have become attached to quite a long list of albums. In time I hope to share them all with you. I have a unique personal taste in music. Which floats all over the musical landscape. My ultimate goal is that some of you will get turned onto to some of these great unknown artists. That are out there going un-noticed by mainstream media. Many of these albums are essential albums that would make any music collection that much closer to being complete.
   

They Sang As They Slew- Get Well

I must admit, when I got his cd, I had very high expectations. They sang as they slew (TSATS) if fronted by Jamey Bozeman, younger brother of Lee Bozeman (of cult hero luxury) . I loved luxury, and I hoped tsats would live up to that legacy. Upon first listen my response was "wow...sounds like the bands I remember from Atlanta in the mid 90's". Then I realized that's why I had such high expectations, because that music was so good. ok, the cd. If you like big guitars, minor keys, great vocals, and cool production, you need to get this. Continue

 

Jimmy Eat World- Chase This Light

The Mesa, Arizona band who acquired their name from a poster on which the little brother (Ed Linton) of the band's guitarist - Tom Linton - made exclaiming Jimmy Eat World, expressing some hard feelings in the most protesting manner he could think of towards the Linton's other brother Jim, has been a moniker that has outlasted those hard feelings with the band's newly released fifth studio album Chase This Light.   Continue

 

Spoon- Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Something happened to Spoon between records five and six--they got big. It's not as if these unprepossessing Texans were unpopular before, but after Gimme Fiction, their music was everywhere. There was Britt Daniel, who has since moved to Oregon, singing karaoke on cult favorite Veronica Mars, there was his soundtrack for deadpan Will Ferrell vehicle Stranger Than Fiction, and then there were the countless times their tunes, especially 2002's "The Way We Get By," appeared in other movies and TV shows.  Continue

 

77's- The 77's

The Island Record is considered by many fans to be the band's high water mark. It is an album that by all accounts should have broken the band wide open. With their first two albums the guys were building a decent following on college radio, and were getting press in Rolling Stone. Everything was lining up, and the distribution with Island seemed like the ticket. Then U2 released The Joshua Tree right on the heels of Seventy Sevens - and the team at Island made their Sophie's Choice and sent the 77's to the showers.  Continue

 

Viva Voce- The Heat Can Melt Your Brain

For seven years now Kevin and Anita Robinson, a pair of Southern transplants turned Portland musical innovators, have been creating, recording and performing their distinct brand of modern rock as Viva Voce. Wayne Everett- KingsQueens

A while back I reported in a review that The Lassie Foundation, one of the best pop bands you I've never heard, had finally decided to call it quits after releasing their best record, The El Dorado LP. Given the distinguished careers of the band's musicians, it's unsurprising that all of them went on to other projects: drummer Frank Lenz dropped an album of blue-eyed soul with The Hot Stuff, guitarist Eric Campuzano pursued a Flying Saucer Attack direction with his drone project Charity Empressa.   Continue

 

Cool Hand Luke- The Fires Of Life

Enter the life of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Enter their fire. Then realize we were never promised a Christian walk without fire. Once this reality settles, pick up Cool Hand Luke's sophomore release, The Fires of Life. Based on Isaiah 43:2 and Psalm 30:5, Mark Nicks, Chris Susi and Brandon Morgan lift scriptures and paste them right into the song, creating a mosaic of language mixed with delicate instrumentation.  Continue

 

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers- She's The One

Nominally a soundtrack to Ed Burns' film She's the One, Tom Petty's Songs and Music from "She's the One" plays like an entity of its own, standing up quite well without the movie itself. She's the One is one of Petty's most relaxed efforts -- several of the songs feel like they were written and performed quickly, almost as if they were throwaways, but that ramshackle feeling actually works in the album's favor.  Continue

 

Echoing Green- Winter Of Our Discontent

The synthpop world of music is akin to a dreamy meditational state that conjures visions of futuristic vistas, sophisticated electronics and high-tech living. Indeed, the nature of the music would not exist without the advancement in electronic music. This being the case you might find it surprising that the genre could be spiritual and even mystical. Honey- Three

Honey's Three is one of those all-too-rare love life soundtrack albums. While Dashboard Confessional's albums are soundtracks to a tortured love life, and Further Seems Forever's album is a soundtrack to a long-distance love life, Three is a soundtrack to a wistful, longing, romantic love life.   Continue
