Here lies a list of some of my favorite albums. Over the years I have become attached to quite a long list of albums. In time I hope to share them all with you. I have a unique personal taste in music. Which floats all over the musical landscape. My ultimate goal is that some of you will get turned onto to some of these great unknown artists. That are out there going un-noticed by mainstream media. Many of these albums are essential albums that would make any music collection that much closer to being complete.

Everett M. Dirkson once said, "Life is not a static thing." This couldn't be more true when it comes to music. Every few years, there is a new version of anti-pop, and within time, hipsters even become anti the anti-pop. How long ago was it when 'emo' made its big splash? Who were the pioneering bands of the then-refreshing sound? Even now, we quickly recognize the genre and the era when it first emerged, yet it's difficult to name drop THE band, ya know? April's Motel Room- Black 14

The band, April's Motel Room, the CD Black 14. The CD was released durring the height of the Alternative "revolution" while acts like Ween and The Flaming Lips took center stage with foolish lyrics and a rehashed overused sound of the day. April's Motel Room must have been deemed, too intelligent, too creative, or not angry enough, because the rational behind the lack of support this CD received is not understandable. From the mass combination of sounds to the splashes of catchy yet intelligent lyrics this CD stands out as a winner.     Continue

 

Popcult- Popcult Ep

Once in a while, you come across a band that you just know has that special sound that could make it big if given the right amount of exposure. Popcult is one such band.This four piece crew is comprised of Justin Renaud, Tyler Venter, Alex Halvorson and Brandon Proff. Discreetly titled, 2011, this is the first EP for the group and they're offering it for free in exchange for an email address.It's a pretty good deal since you get a great set of polished indie pop rock tracks that's charming and easy to listen to. The Normals- Coming To Life

In trying to find a few words or one word which sums up this amazing new album, I could only think "spectacular." This new album by the normals is gorgeous. The band has taken a more stripped approach much like jars took to accomplish "if I left...." Just by listening to the first few songs, one can quickly realize that the normals have matured and have been blessed. "Every Moment" is a U2ish anthem, replete with Osenga's passion laden vocals. From there, the cd only progresses. "Black Dress" is a sensational treatment of the human flaw of lust. "We are the beggars..." is simply put, incredible! Guitar solo included! Continue

 

Sponge- Rotting Pinata

"Plowed" was one of the best rock videos I've ever seen. I never knew of a band named Sponge before that. I didn't care. I wanted to buy Rotting Pinata straight away. Before I could, "Molly" was released. What a lovely song it was. Now, I really had to get me a copy of RP. I still did not have any clue about Sponge. I still didn't care. I went ahead, bought me the CD of RP, and loved it. What a fantastic contribution to rock music. Continue

 

Wyclef Jean- Carnival, Vol.2: Memoirs of an Immigrant

Wyclef Jean definitely caught the public off guard with the release of "Carnival Vol. II." It's been ten years now since the release of "The Carnival," an album upon which opinion has always been widely divided. Opinion was not divided when it came to The Fugees, where Lauryn Hill was always considered to be the breakout star, while Pras was considered to be lyrical weak link.  Continue

 

GlassByrd- Open Wide This Window

The first thing that strikes me about this band is the absolutely gorgeous vocals by members Marc Byrd and Christine Glass. His is heart melting and hers is angelic and ethereal. The next thing I notice is that this recording is VERY religious (Christian) as you would think by reading the track listing. While this is usually a huge turn-off for me, the music is just so beautiful that I can't help but really like this CD. Continue

 

The Billions- Never Felt This Way Before

How redundant it must be for some, writing and rewriting the pop song, drawing from the same well of thematic content. Ever since The Beatles asked that special someone to "Love, Love me do" myriads of musical artisans have found the inspiration for their craft in mulling over relationship issues: Weezer's looking for "a girl who acts like no one else", Phil Collins preaches the danger of the "easy lover", and Nirvana rocked with world with a longing little tune "about a girl." Hotel Underground-Rejoice

I have to admit the first time I heard this cd I wasn't
much into it. There's nothing new about their sound. Kind
of a throw back if you ask me. The lead vocalist Scotty Cantino
reminds me a lot of Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips. Which
is a good thing.

Sur La Mer-Prelude To The Sea

If you are familiar with post-rock. Then you are probably familiar with
a few of the giants from the genre. Like Explosions in the Sky,
Godspeed You Black Emperor and Sigur Ros. Now I have nothing
against the genre. In fact I have stumbled across a lot of good music
in the genre. My problem is the repetitive nature of most the bands
that follow the three I mentioned. It seems their styles are so often
copied. That every band that comes along now seems like a clone
